If you’re thinking about living in Monmouth County NJ, chances are you’ve already looked at homes online, compared school districts, and maybe even checked property taxes. Those are all important pieces of the puzzle, but they don’t tell the whole story.
After helping buyers and sellers throughout New Jersey for more than 20 years, I’ve learned that the people who are happiest after moving here didn’t just choose the right house—they chose the right lifestyle.
That’s exactly what this article is about.
Instead of focusing only on real estate, I want to share what everyday life is really like in Monmouth County. From the beaches and downtowns to traffic, local restaurants, community events, and the little things that make this area special, this is the information I wish every buyer knew before making a move.
Whether you’re relocating from New York City, North Jersey, Pennsylvania, or another part of the country, here’s what nobody tells you before moving to Monmouth County, New Jersey.
Monmouth County Isn’t One Lifestyle
One of the biggest misconceptions about living in Monmouth County NJ is that it’s all the same.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
One of the reasons I love helping buyers relocate here is because there really is a community for almost every lifestyle. Within a short drive, you can experience completely different settings that feel like different parts of the state.
Love the beach? Monmouth County offers that!
Communities like Spring Lake, Sea Girt, Belmar, Long Branch, and Asbury Park all offer their own unique personalities. Some are quiet and relaxed, while others are known for live music, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife.
Prefer a suburban neighborhood? Monmouth County offers that!
Marlboro, Holmdel, Manalapan, Middletown, and Freehold Township are popular choices for buyers looking for larger homes, parks, recreation programs, and neighborhoods with a strong sense of community.
Want more space? Monmouth County offers that!
Colts Neck is known for larger properties, horse farms, scenic roads, and a quieter lifestyle.
Looking for a walkable downtown? Monmouth County offers that!
Red Bank and Freehold Borough offer coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, community events, and an atmosphere where you can spend an afternoon without constantly getting back in your car.
This is why I always ask my buyers one simple question:
“What do you want your life to look like?”
The answer to that question usually leads us to the right town.
The Beach Becomes Part of Everyday Life
People moving from other parts of the country often think of the Jersey Shore as a vacation destination.
When you live in Monmouth County, it becomes part of your normal routine.
Instead of planning an entire vacation around going to the beach, you’ll find yourself heading there after work for a walk, meeting friends for dinner by the water, or watching the sunset on a random Tuesday evening.
That’s one of the biggest lifestyle changes buyers notice after moving here.
The beach stops being a destination.
It simply becomes part of where you live.
That easy access to the shoreline is one of the biggest reasons many people choose Monmouth County over other parts of New Jersey.
Every Town Has Its Own Personality
One mistake I see buyers make is trying to find the “best” town.
The truth is, there isn’t one.
The best town depends entirely on your lifestyle.
Some buyers want nightlife and walkability.
Others want quiet neighborhoods with sidewalks and cul-de-sacs.
Some want larger lots.
Others want to be close to the train or major highways for commuting.
Monmouth County offers all of those options.
That’s why working with someone who understands the differences between each community can save you a tremendous amount of time during your home search.
Let’s Talk About Property Taxes
One of the first questions I hear from buyers relocating to New Jersey is about property taxes.
Yes, New Jersey property taxes are generally higher than in many other states.
But I encourage buyers not to focus on that number alone.
Think about what you’re getting in return.
Many Monmouth County communities offer outstanding parks, recreation programs, libraries, youth sports, community events, shopping, dining, and access to excellent transportation routes.
When you compare communities, it’s important to evaluate the overall lifestyle—not just one line on the tax bill.
Traffic in Monmouth County: What You Should Really Expect
Let’s be honest—traffic is one of the biggest concerns for people considering a move to Monmouth County.
If you’ve spent any time researching the area, you’ve probably heard stories about Route 9, the Garden State Parkway, or Route 18.
So what’s the truth?
Yes, traffic exists, especially during weekday rush hours. If you’re commuting toward New York City or traveling during peak times, you’ll definitely experience congestion on some of the county’s busiest roads.
But here’s what longtime residents know.
You learn the rhythm of the area.
You quickly discover the best back roads, the ideal times to travel, and which routes to avoid during busy hours. Before long, what once seemed intimidating simply becomes part of your daily routine.
For many residents, the lifestyle they gain far outweighs the occasional inconvenience of traffic.
After all, you’re trading that commute for weekends at the beach, beautiful parks, incredible restaurants, and communities that people are proud to call home.
There Is Always Something Happening
One of my favorite things about living in Monmouth County is that there is always something to do.
No matter what time of year it is, you’ll find events happening throughout the county.
During the summer, residents enjoy outdoor concerts, farmers’ markets, food truck festivals, waterfront dining, local fairs, and of course, beautiful days at the Jersey Shore.
Fall is one of my favorite seasons.
Local farms come alive with apple picking, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hayrides, and fresh baked treats. It’s the perfect time to explore some of Monmouth County’s most beloved local businesses.
Winter brings holiday markets, festive downtowns, tree lighting ceremonies, and restaurants decorated for the season.
Then spring arrives, and suddenly parks are full again, patios reopen, flowers bloom, and everyone seems eager to get back outside.
One thing you’ll quickly notice is that Monmouth County isn’t just a place where people live.
It’s a place where people participate.
Communities host events.
Neighbors gather.
Families spend weekends exploring local businesses.
There is a genuine sense of community that many people don’t realize exists until they move here.
You’re Buying More Than a House
One thing I’ve learned after helping buyers for more than two decades is that people rarely remember the features of the house they almost didn’t buy.
Instead, they remember the life they built after moving.
✅They remember their favorite pizza place.
✅The coffee shop where they stop every Saturday morning.
✅The beach where they watch the sunset.
✅The local park where they walk their dog.
✅The restaurants where they celebrate birthdays.
✅The neighbors who became friends.
✅Those experiences become the memories that make a place feel like home.
That’s why I encourage buyers to think beyond square footage and countertops.
A house is important.
But your lifestyle is what you’ll experience every single day.
Choosing the right community often matters just as much as choosing the right home.
Is Living in Monmouth County NJ Right for You?
The answer depends entirely on the lifestyle you’re looking for.
If you want beautiful beaches, charming downtowns, outstanding parks, excellent restaurants, strong communities, and easy access to New York City, Monmouth County offers an incredible variety of options.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet suburban neighborhood, a vibrant downtown, a waterfront lifestyle, or more space and privacy, there’s likely a town here that feels like the perfect fit.
The key is finding the community that matches your goals, your family, and the way you want to live.
That’s where local knowledge makes all the difference.

Cori’s Pick of the Week
Okay, before we wrap up, it’s time for Cori’s Pick of the Week!
This week we’re heading to Sea Bright and one of my favorite waterfront spots — The Rum Runner.
If you’re looking for a great place to grab lunch, dinner, or a cocktail with an amazing view, this is such a fun summer spot.
It’s right on the Shrewsbury River, there’s indoor and outdoor dining, and if you can get here around sunset, even better.
Grab a drink, watch the boats go by, and just enjoy being at the Jersey Shore.
And honestly, this is one of the things I love about living in Monmouth County. We have places like this practically in our backyard.
So put The Rum Runner in Sea Bright on your summer list!
That’s Cori’s Pick of the Week — just one more reason I love living here in Monmouth County.
